Despite my 14 years of experience as an automotive journalist, there are still vehicles that give me butterflies even today. Needless to say, in such cases, it is particularly difficult to remain impartial and objective. After all, that's the beauty of this job since you occasionally discover true gems, and that's exactly what I experienced with the new generation Chevrolet Trax during my test drive last year.
The model is back for 2025, and there are no major changes, which is far from being a problem as it still stands out from the competition. Let's just say that Chevrolet did things right this time, unlike the previous generation. The 2025 Trax is the kind of vehicle that inspires adventure with its dynamic silhouette and sporty appearance. In my opinion, it is one of the best small SUVs on the market. Moreover, it is enjoyable to drive and offers a very comprehensive standard equipment.
Range and Pricing
The 2025 Chevrolet Trax range consists of five different versions, starting with the front-wheel-drive LS model. Of course, this version is far from being the most popular, but it remains interesting, especially with its starting price of $25,725. Next is the 1RS version with a starting price of $27,225. Then come the LT and 2RS versions with starting prices of $29,325 and $31,125, respectively. Finally, the Activ version sits at the top of the range with a price of $31,125, which is surprisingly reasonable for a model of this caliber with such a high level of equipment. In fact, if your budget allows, I highly recommend opting for the 2RS or Activ version. The latter also offers a more interesting look with the removal of chrome and those black wheels.
Category and Competition
The Chevrolet Trax is a subcompact SUV, but it could very well compete with compact SUVs on many levels. It is the most interesting model in its category, both aesthetically and mechanically, in my opinion. General Motors has done a remarkable job here, and it's important to acknowledge that.

Design and Technologies
The 2025 Chevrolet Trax features a sporty and dynamic look thanks to its sleek silhouette and very aggressive lines. Its front end, inspired by the Blazer, gives it character. In short, it's a model that certainly doesn't fail to turn heads as it passes by. Moreover, as if that wasn't enough, the American manufacturer added a nice color palette, including shades like Cacti Green and Nitro Metallic Yellow.
The interior of the Chevrolet Trax is ultra-modern and surprisingly comfortable, which is not always the case with this type of vehicle. In fact, it doesn't feel like being in an entry-level vehicle, which is quite surprising. Finally, the American manufacturer's small SUV benefits from all the technologies one can dream of in a modern vehicle, making it even more enjoyable.
Performance
The 2025 Chevrolet Trax offers only one mechanical option, and that's perfectly fine. The American manufacturer's SUV features a small 1.2-liter turbocharged 3-cylinder engine with 137 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque. It is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission that sends power to the front wheels. I know, it doesn't sound particularly thrilling as a mechanical configuration, and it's especially not very modern with the 6-speed transmission. However, the latter does the job well, and I would even say it is better programmed and more efficient than many 7, 8, or even 9-speed transmissions. As for the absence of all-wheel drive, it's not necessarily a bad thing since the Trax's goal is to remain affordable. Personally, I think it's an excellent decision by the American manufacturer. Not to mention that this combination allows it to achieve an average fuel consumption of less than 7.9 L/100 km.
Weak Points
A more powerful engine would certainly be welcome. All-wheel drive should be offered on at least 2 or 3 versions.
Strong Points
It's a vehicle with character that turns heads as it passes. It exudes the same presence as a high-end vehicle. Its interior is modern and very well-equipped with technology. Its mechanics are reliable and very fuel-efficient.
Signature Element
The 2025 Chevrolet Trax is a serious, competent, and well-equipped model. It offers a very interesting combination at a more than attractive price.
Final Word
When you know that the average selling price of a new vehicle exceeds $60,000 today, you can wonder how manufacturers still manage to produce quality vehicles for half that amount. The Chevrolet Trax is a good example of this. Certainly, it's not perfect, but it's very hard to criticize it within its price range, take it from me.
